Weekend Photos

I know the agreement was that we were going to post a photo a day.  I hadn't taken into account just how frenetic my life would be with a new job.  What I have managed every week so far is a photo walk.  So here are some of this bits from todayisolation 2

Mallard duck procession

Mallard ducks, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

While I was photographing this pair of swans, a flotilla of mallard ducks got in on the act.

I deliberated focused on the second duck from the front. I love the vibrant green and yellow and the birds' reflections.

Blue tits on feeder

Blue tits on feeder, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

I think I'm getting better at photographing the birds that visit our garden. The light today was really good, with the sun illuminating the feeders.

The birds are so hungry at the moment that they'll come down within seconds of you standing still. I was able to stand in the garden (so not trying to shoot through glass) and snapped blue tits, great tits, a robin and a female house sparrow (you can see the complete set here).

I picked this snap of two blue tits on one of our feeders. The lower bird has already got hold of a seed, while the bird above is probably waiting for a turn where the food is.

Blue tit

Blue tit, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.
Snapped this blue tit feeding on fat in the garden.

Probably the best of the shots I took today given poor settings and the fact that I've managed to mess up the focusing screen a little. Fortunately, I can still take shots but I've had to order a new screen from the States. :(

Unfortunately there is a little purple fringing on the photo, which I didn't have time to edit out.

Montage… the computer thinks it’s one image.

montage

This is my cheat, its photo shopped into one image, honest. I’m thinking it makes up for the missed photos last week???

Reeds by Ice at sunset, a tufted duck and a grey heron. All taken in that last hour before sunset. What a gorgeous light it gives. Gotta remember that for future pictures.

Ruddy Duck

Ruddy Duck, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

As the light faded over the London Wetland Centre I caught this male ruddy duck having a flap in the water.

It's not the sharpest image due to the lens which tends to soften images at 300m, the ISO setting, and the fact I couldn't easily set a faster shutter speed.

Not bad, though. I like the broken reflections in the ripples he's created and the pose itself.

Quizzical Gull

Quizzical Gull, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

I spent about half-an-hour this afternoon along the River Thames in Kingston, when the torrential rain subsided and the sun came out briefly.

The waterfowl along that stretch of water are pretty tame — probably because they feed on scraps from passers-by, despite the notices telling people not to feed them — and so I was able to snap a number of swans, geese and gulls.

This little fellow was perched on a wooden post in front of someone's barge, and had the most delightful quizzical look on his face as he tilted his head back and forth.

Bubbles

This was a test using some new kit.  Its one of those moments where the photo isn't great but all the bubble photos were duff… and trying to sort out life kinda got in the way.

Things I’ve learnt… gotta work out how to use my new kit, gotta work out that whole lighting thing… mmmm  … why did I agree with myself to show my learning???

OK so this isnt the worlds most exciting picture but I was playing around with appature and depth of field. Trying to see how much of a depth of field I could get with something relatively small

Abandoned hat

Abandoned hat, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

I missed taking a photo yesterday, with my great excuse being that I've just started a photography course (despite not taking my camera to the first class!)

Anyway, back on track with today's photo.

I often see assorted bits of winter clothing when out walking in the woods. Someone drops a glove, hat or scarf and another kind soul drapes it over a branch in case the owner comes back to collect it.

They rarely do, it seems.

This white and pink woolly hat easily stood out on a grey, wet morning. I snapped a few pictures of it, this being my favourite as much because of the blue-white light, probably caused by water droplets on the out of focus tree branches behind.

Robin in tree

This robin was very obliging and sat in the same place for at least ten minutes while I took photos of him.

Not surprising really, as he is probably singing to defend his territory and possibly starting to think about attracting a mate.

Shovelers in Flight

London Wetland Centre, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.
At a very snowy, icy London Wetlands Centre today I managed to snap these flying shovelers (at least I hope they are shovelers?)

It would have been great to get an even closer shot, but given how difficult it can be to catch birds in flight with any degree of clarity, I'm quite impressed with this.

My ongoing theme of golden backgrounds also continues here.

What can I say, its not been the best day for pictures but the contrast on this slightly out of focus metal star has some interest and texture against the wood in the background.

…. Bring on the weekend and not having think about that work thing.

Hungry Caterpillar Mug

It may not surprise you to learn that I hadn't taken any photos today... until about 10pm.

This was my attempt to find some inspiration at the same time as wanting a cup of tea. It is my favourite mug, if that counts, though it's certainly not my best photo.

Robin in Back Garden

Robin in Back Garden, originally uploaded by londonbluefish.

I managed to snap this after having sat as still as possible in a near freezing garden for about half-an-hour.

Some birds were coming closer but they just wouldn't keep still :)

I love the impending snow clouds, the reflection of the great glass structure in the water, and the colours of the foreground plants.
